Saturday’s Signing with Jason Latour, Robbi Rodriguez, and Rico Renzi.
I was lucky enough to attend the signing and launch party of Spider-Gwen #1 (you can read my review of it here) at Heroes Aren’t Hard To Find in Charlotte, NC this past weekend. My friends and I aren’t particularly early risers, so when we made our way down from the Triad area of North Carolina there was already a considerable crowd inside and outside of the store.
The Heroes crew did a great job with handling the signing in general, the store opened at 10, but the signing didn’t start until 1. So they handed out numbered wristbands so people didn’t have to wait around for 3+ hours, which was great because it gave everyone time to go out and get food so there weren’t any “hangry” incidents that we all know are unfortunately possible in long lines. The store was well stocked so even casual fans coming in after 1 still had opportunities to grab a variant or two and even had a cake with Jason Latour’s Heroes variant cover on it for everyone to enjoy.
But what made this an event rather than just your run of the mill signing was Married With Sea Monsters. The Waco, Texas band became somewhat of an internet sensation when they released a real-life version of the song featured in Edge of Spider-verse #2 on YouTube playing as “The Mary Janes.” They played an in-store set and the 7” white vinyl of that song and the amazing B-side “Safe Word” with sleeve art by Rico Renzi and Robbi Rodriguez was the prime item up for grabs on the day.
As much fun as the signing was, the after party and Married With Sea Monsters concert at Snug Harbor was the highlight of the day. Gig posters featuring Latour’s variant artwork were available and after signing and sketching all afternoon the creative team were gracious enough to sign and sketch even more as the band was setting up (a friend of mine asked Robbi Rodriguez something along the lines of “how’s the wrist holding up” to which he replied “you have no idea”). It was a great time to be had by everyone and you can tell everyone really wanted to be there, which made the event so much more enjoyable. Married With Sea Monsters revealed yesterday on their Instagram page that they’ll be back in Charlotte in June around HeroesCon and I can’t even imagine what the crowd will be like then.
