BOOM! Studios takes us back to high school in Jake Lawrence’s “Teen Dog”. He’s just like any other high schooler; he’s trying to figure out who he is, he has aspirations for the future, he’s confused about dating, and he’s a dog. Just like everyone else.
Lawrence introduces us to the Teen Dog world in this charming first issue. We get to meet Mariella, his punk rock chick/best friend. There’s Mr. McGuffin, the hard-nose, no-frills teacher. And of course, every hero needs and anti-hero, in comes “Thug Pug”. The cast is great and the setting is even better. Lawrence builds a world around Teen Dog that’s believable even though it’s cartoony. The high school feels like a high school because everyone is represented. You have your geeks, your jocks, your freaks, and your geeks. Also, read this book if you want to know the difference between a geek and a nerd, and who is better fit for the zombie apocalypse. However, there are some characters that you might not expect. Like Sara Sato, the quarterback.
This was a really fun read and it breezed by effortlessly, which is a nice reprieve from books that seem to drag on and on. Lawrence’s artistic style is reminiscent of Adventure Time in its form, but it has a uniqueness to it. His strong suit has to be his writing, however. He develops his characters so clearly that you feel like you know them personally by the end. They have depth and life, and they really seem to stick with you. It’s also flippin’ hilarious! A special “no prize” to anyone who can find the subtle Dazed and Confused reference. This book is a real winner in my eyes. Give it a shot if you’re looking to add some fun to your weekly pulls. Happy reading!
