Red Sonja: The Black Tower is more than a comic book. It is an essay on the modern occult, and a treatise on modern-day feminism through the eyes of renaissance women. Just kidding. It’s boobs, blades, and blood. Just the way we like it. Just the way Dynamite Comics knows how to do it.
The Black Tower has sprung up in a quiet little village overnight, and since this is based in the “ye olde” days, everyone assumes that the tower is evil and that demons live within it. So, of course, once a woman does emerge from the tower, the town’s people, led by Fengar Tolt (classic Robert E. Howard name), decide that she’s a demon and she must pay, with her life. Why? Because we say so, dammit! Luckily for this “demon woman” Red Sonja happens to be passing through town, and she doesn’t take kindly to the raping and murdering of women, demon or otherwise. Obviously Fengar Tolt has never heard of Ms. Sonja, or else he would have never stood in her way. LET THE BLOOD-BATH ENSUE!!! Needless to say, without much effort, Red gets her way and the tower and its inhabitants live to see another day. To be continued…
This is book is exactly what you expect, and for that matter, exactly what you’re looking for in a Red Sonja title. It strips away all the pretensions, and leaves you with a solid Sonja story that the whole family can love, well…maybe not the kids. Frank Tieri takes his first run at the red-headed sword mistress, but you can find his writing all over ever major hero you can think of, from Batman to Deadpool. Having Red Sonja in the hands of such an experienced writer bodes well. On the other hand, Cezar Razek has dealt with this little lady before on the “Witchblade Red Sonja” Top Cow cross over. He’s knows how to handle that metal-clad bikini with class and style.
Honestly, I had a lot of fun reading this book. It’s fast, funny, and easy to read. All of which rates high in my list of positive attributes. If you’re looking for a title to take you away for a little while, this one might be just right for you. Happy reading!
