Welcome back to Hexed. We left with Raina joining souls with an ancient Roman warrior, and Lucifer projecting her astral-self into another dimension, while Yves and Harlot conspire to take down the whole lot of them. Caught up? Good! Here, we, gooooo….
We open chapter two (Through the Window Shade) with Raina’s face glowing. Weird? It gets weirder. While Raina and Ms. Brisendine try to figure out what that means, cut to Lucifer. She’s stuck in what she describes as “The Shade”. It feels like one of those places that is neither here, nor there. Dan Mora’s art depicting “The Shade” is absolutely mesmerizing. It takes the eye in a completely different direction, and feels a lot like Gaiman’s Sandman. Jump over to Yves, who’s trying to figure out the significance of the tattoo he received last issue. Harlot is no help, of course (she seems like a real pain in the ass), and Yves is left with more questions than answers.
There is a lot of catching up that takes place in this issue. We have to find out what “The Shade” is and how Lucifer got there. We also need to find out why Raina’s face is glowing and what, if any, connections it might have. Throw on top of that the evolving drama of Yves and Harlot, and the power struggle they have with Ms. Brisendine, and you’ve got yourself quite the little story. Sprinkle in some magic and throw a bow on it. Comic perfection.
Michael Alan Nelson really encourages the reader to explore the universe he’s creating here. You feel almost compelled to look further than the page allows. Mostly, I was blown away by Dan Mora’s art in this issue. The ease with which he transitions from the surreal feeling of “The Shade” and the edgy real world is remarkable. If you enjoyed the first issue, then this one will quench the thirst you’ve been feeling. If you didn’t catch the first issue, do yourself and the comic community a favor, and go out and get both issues today. You shan’t be disappointed. Happy reading!
