You guys! Seriously! I’ve found it! The next great thing in comics! Interdimensional-arthopping-magicbased-thievery…with dragons. This book is…well, it’s basically the most original take on magic/occult themes I’ve read since…anything! Michael Alan Nelson (incantations) and Dan Mora (representations) keep Boom Studios riding the wave of success with “Hexed”.
Lucifer, the art thief not the devil (duh), is the main attraction in this title. By day she’s your ordinary, run-of-the-mill international art thief. But by night, she is literally the most kick ass, dragon-conjuring, elemental “witch” on the block. One of her many beautiful abilities is sending people into paintings, a wonderful visual might I add, and whilst in those paintings she can suspend time. But, not everything is rainbows and unicorns for little Ms. Lucifer. There’s treachery afoot. We are introduced to a rival conjurer and the family they represent, which elegantly sets itself up for an epic showdown in a future issue.
As far as first issues go, this one takes the cake. It perfectly sets the theme and pace for the series. You meet all the important players and are given enough background and foreshadowing to keep you wanting more. An added bonus is Dan Mora’s gorgeous art. I haven’t seen his work before, but after reading Hexed, you can best believe I’m gonna find more. If you’re like me, and reading comics is your escape from the real world, then Hexed is the book you’ve been waiting for. I absolutely recommend this book with the highest regard. Well done, again, Boom Studios. Happy reading!
