Max Bemis really knows how to spin a yarn. Is that a phrase…”spin a yarn”? What the hell does that mean?! When have you ever, seen anyone, spinning yarn?! For what purpose?! I mean, of all the stupid expressions out there, that one takes the cake! …Takes the cake? Why the hell would you take cake? And that’s supposed to be a good thing? …Wait, what were we talking about? Oh yeah, Max Bemis, world-famous yarn spinner!
Evil Empire #5, by Max Bemis and BOOM studios, delivers a look into the psyche of man deranged. In this seeming one-off, we meet a man who by all respects is just your average serial killer. Unfortunately for him, he’s caught right in the middle of Sam Duggin’s new “Evil Empire” idea. As we saw in the last issue of EE, Duggin has been elected president and shocks the world when he reiterates the sentiments of the “late” Kenneth Laramy. So, all hell has broken loose, which, as it turns out, does not sit well with a man who makes his living on breaking loose with hell. Nevertheless, this issue gives a nice Segway into how the rebellion against the EE starts and the connection between the present and the past bridges ever closer.
Aiding Bemis in this month’s script, is the beautiful art of Joe Eisma. It’s soft, and the colors are understated, which balances beautifully with the gruesome content of the story. I have a feeling that EE will be coming to a head in the next issue. The cliff hanger at the end of this book leaves you with more questions than answers, and that typically means that there will be redemption in the next chapter. If you are not yet up to speed on this title, first, kick your own ass for not doing so, and second, do so. You will not be disappointed and you’ll be jumping on at the perfect place. Be nice to each other, and happy reading!
