July 29, 2015. That was the last time we saw a release of the superb and terrifying new Archie Horror title Chilling Adventures of Sabrina by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Afterlife With Archie) and Robert Hack (The Black Hood). Seems crazy that it would take that long to release the next issue of a comic book, but where the creative team fails with quantity, they brilliant make up for it in quality!
I was really pleased that they caught readers up by recapping the events that unfolded in the first four issues before throwing us into issue five. This was a nice gesture considering the wait and it was extremely helpful and I think significant as we begin chapter five.
It’s the trial of Sabrina Victoria Spellman as she stands accused by the Witches’ Council of having relations with a mortal. That mortal would be Harvey Kinkel, who as a result had his life prematurely and violently taken from him. The trial coincides with flashbacks of her father’s (Edward Spellman) trial which turns out to be relative to our story, as it ends with another brutal cliffhanger that now seems synonymous with these Archie Horror titles.
First of all let me just say I love the look of this book! Hack is a master of the dark and gritty style and a true visual artist. He brings a unique approach each and every issue which makes this Sabrina title something we seldom get to experience in graphic novels.
This book creeps me out so much I started having a panic attack after reading the diabolical incantation. This is of course the fault of Aguirre-Sacasa, who along with his Afterlife work is scripting some of the best work we have seen in the horror comic genre. If we have to wait almost a year in between issues for any comic book, it better be as good as Chilling Adventures of Sabrina!
