$2.99 U.S. Archie? Like, the Archie that just died, that Archie? Wait…what do you mean that was a different time line and a different universe? Ok, so then this is the zombie Archie, right?…What?…How many freaking Archie universes are there? Ok, so then this is now called “normal” Archie universe? And he’s still just a redheaded, freckled kid trying to date the two hottest girls in school? Good. At least then it’s based in reality! So what’s Archie been up to lately?…Oh, I’m supposed to tell you? Right.
Well, it’s a beautiful summer day in Riverdale, and Archie, accompanied by the ever-loving Jughead, is enjoying a cool relaxing dip in the local river. Archie muses to ol’ Juggie that he really needs to fill his summer dating quota since Veronica is in Europe. Jughead offers the idea of dating Betty whilst Ms. Lodge has made herself unavailable. To this, Archie responds that he can date Betty during the school year. For you see, the summer is when Archie gets himself some strange. This conversation of quotas and dating timelines was overheard by Sheila and Bobbi (clearly the two nosiest girls in town). They are so upset with the lasciviousness of Mr. Andrew’s intentions, that they devise a plan to bring him to his knees.
Over the next few pages, our auburn hero is seen running the gamut of dates, each one a greater disaster than the last. To the point of exhaustion is Archie spent with these women. Finally, Archie is given a momentary reprieve from his callous malady when he is approached by Toni Topaz (who of course we all remember as Jughead’s competitive eating rival from Jughead double digest #176, right?) but obviously Archie does not. He takes her to Pop’s for a bite to eat and when he returns from washing up in the restroom, he is surprised to find that she has ordered a small fortune’s worth of food. This is when Jughead catches wind of what’s going on and decides that his loveable pal needs to be taught one last lesson. This lesson sees Archiekins going through the proverbial wringer once more, finally coming out the other side seeing the error of his machismo ways.
This book is classic Archie gold! Archie wants more than he can handle, and in the end needs to learn a lesson. It’s reminiscent of the Archie’s of old, and by old I mean the 90’s. Anywho, this book is exactly what you need if you are looking for classic, non-dead, non-undead Archie comics. Happy reading!
