So on the last day of Alamo City Comic Con, my wife and I decided to purchase a print from Chad Coleman. Coleman was one of the guests that I really wanted to interview, but I quickly found out that getting a hold of the guests or their agents ahead of time was very difficult. We had been huge fans of Coleman ever since he made his debut on the third season of HBO’s The Wire and were looking forward to his increased role on The Walking Dead. That’s exactly how we started our conversation, while my buddy stood to the side of us video taping the encounter. An ACCC representative quickly put an end to our attempt at an interview, asking us to stop the video. Chad was a good sport and he continued to chat with us. One of the questions I asked him was about his role as Dennis “Cutty” Wise on The Wire and if that particular role had any influence on TWD producers and his selection to portray Tyreese. Coleman immediately credited that specific role to his casting on the AMC hit show. “It had everything to do with that role” (The Wire) he exclaimed.
As we wrapped up the brief meet, he told us to make sure we caught that nights episode of TWD (which was October 27), informing us that his character was going to have a significant role. (SPOILERS) That episode of course was Isolation, and we all know how the burning/murder of Karen impacted Tyreese and drove his character to a rage and emotion that we had yet to see. Coleman delivered here in big way, the way all of us who watched him for years as “Cutty” knew he could.
Now with the recent announcement of Luke Cage coming to Netflix in 2015, and the news that Coleman expressed interest in playing the Marvel hero earlier this year in May, it all makes perfect sense. Chad L. Coleman has tremendous range when it comes to acting. Not only has he shown us his brilliant acting skills, as he was involved in probably the greatest season in recent television history (see Season 4 of The Wire), but he is now proving that he can not only tackle the role of an action character, but an action character with so much depth in Tyreese. This is what producers and directors and all those involved in casting need to know and remember when the times comes to choose the next Marvel Defender.
