Kara Wonderland reveals her best games of the year.
Here we are nerds, the end of another year of gaming. Looking back on this year’s games, I am conflicted with feelings of both happiness and disappointment. Happiness because I played some truly amazing games, disappointment because I saw the end of one of my favorite franchises and also at the lack of games I actually felt compelled to play.
With that out of the way here is my short, but extremely rad list of favorite games of 2015:
3. Until Dawn – I enjoy a good horror game. I really enjoy a captivating story. I REALLY REALLY enjoy when a game has a Goosebumps “Choose your own adventure” vibe and this game had that. I could not get enough of both playing and watching others play this game. With so many outcomes, I wasn’t content with just mine.
This game definitely gave me the initial “Oh great, a group of teenagers are going to a cabin in the woods. I bet some cliché murder revenge plot will ensue” and though this isn’t completely off, this title is more than that. I don’t want to reveal too much about this story because I think going into this one blind is best, but like Heavy Rain from 2010 , I honestly felt like these people’s lives were in my hands and my actions would decide their fate. I also want to mention how well acted I felt this game was and that it was full of me quietly whispering “what the fuck” to myself more than once.
2. Rise of the Tomb Raider - My love for the majestic unicorn that is Laura Croft is something I should probably consider having looked at, but until it keeps me from functioning in real life, I will keep raiding spider web filled fire hazards till I’m locked away, but I digress.
In the newest title in the Tomb Raider franchise we finally get to see what made the badass never back down Laura we met back on OG PlayStation. This game takes most of the things I loved from the first installment and expanded on them. We see more side quests, more things to scavenge for, and WAY more encounters with natives and the evil corporation Trinity. I should also mention you get lions, tigers, and bears (say it with me…oh my). I found this game challenging on multiple occasions but never impossible and the game developers give you more than one epic view of landscapes that makes you want to go outside (just kidding). Rise of the Tomb Raider is a must for anyone who loves a good story with amazing graphics, and maybe a challenging puzzle or two, so grab your bow and get ready to fall down every possible mountain on the planet!
1. Batman Arkham Knight - I don’t even know what I can say about this game that won’t give away any of the many twists and turns put together in this heart breaking, emotional roller coaster of the final installment to probably the greatest super hero franchise to grace our consoles! Siiiiiigh
To give you a very rough overview, my favorite comic book villain of all time Scarecrow, has basically put together a Batman lynching party with all of Gotham’s most colorful characters, and his new bff Arkham Knight. Together they plan on releasing a fear toxin that will unleash our biggest fears and turn our beloved city to ruins, thus destroying our dear Bats. Of course there is MUCH more to this story, but I’m not gonna tell you!
I couldn’t have asked for a better conclusion to this series if I had written it myself. The story, the side missions, the gadgets, the seamless combat all combine with amazing graphics to give this series the conclusions it deserves. I almost forgot to mention one of the greatest additions to this game which is the BATMOBILE. I was extremely skeptical about this at first, as I hate driving vehicles in games, but the Batmobile is more like having a second playable character to call in times of need, then just a new mode of transportation. Absolute perfection!
This story had me on the edge of my seat, mouth open, unable to leave my chair to pee. I never wanted this to end, but it did, and it was beautiful. This game has so much to keep you invested and is so full of spoilers, that I don’t even recommend anyone be the room with you if they plan on playing it because at any moment the a bomb of hell could explode all over your life.
That being said, once you are finished with the game don’t stop there because I loved every piece of DLC that has been released for this game. It’s been catching a lot of flak and I’m not sure why. You get to play as other characters form the universe, each with their own combat style and weapons. Yes they are relativity short, but I found them worth my time and a new way to evolve the side details of this world.
Well kids, this brings us to the end of my list and the end of another year of gaming. I know my list was short, but it was also sweet. Full games with amazing stories, amazing characters, from amazing developers. If you need something to fill your time between holiday hangovers, I recommend you look above.
Until next time, Happy New Year, and nerd on!
