This week sees the release of the next creator-owned book from Black Mask Studios, with 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank by Matthew Rosenberg (We Can Never Go Home) and Tyler Boss (Lazarus). If you have not read their work in We Can Never Go Home, this is something that you should remedy immediately!
So I read all the critical praise this first issue received from the likes of [insert kick-ass writer here] and I thought to myself, wow these amazing creators probably enjoyed Black Mask Studios aforementioned title as much as I did, hence all the admiration. What I discovered after reading the first issue last week was a whole new level of elation, so much so that I immediately started sharing my thoughts on social media.
There is nothing complex about the story; still I found it exceptionally imaginative. 4 Kids tells the story of a group of junior high misfits who spend their time playing RPG’s and dealing with bullies, you know just you’re average typical teenage stuff. Paige (probably the protagonist) is the group’s unofficial leader and is absolutely fearless when it comes to standing up for her friends. So in this first issue there’s a home invasion, a sucker punch, a slingshot, and a father expressing his 2nd amendment right. This all leads to our 4 kids getting mixed up with a gang of criminals and I won’t spoil any more of this for you. Just know that I enjoyed the characters, the story, and the art so much, this easily the best first issue of any comics I’ve read this year.
Everything about 4 Kids is comic gold, from the art all the way to the writing and everything in between. Seriously! The lettering from Thomas Mauer is perfect and easy to read except when it’s not supposed to be (see Walter) and the character descriptions are well placed. Hell even the wallpaper design from Courtney Menard stood out beautifully with that yellow on green, and the flatting by Clare Dezutti sets up and allows the artist to display his amazing talent. This would be Tyler Boss, who gives us panel after panel of visual brilliance. This entire book is just gorgeous.
Matthew Rosenberg was born to write comics! He has quickly made a name for himself as one of the most talented up and coming writers in the business. Much like he did in We Can Never Go Home, his words and his overall creativity just resonate well with comic book readers. It’s funny, witty, honest, charming, and was just so much fun to read. Everyone, prepare to meet your new favorite comic book! 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank #1 encompasses everything that is right about comics!
